The Stop the Violence Movement (STVM) is a non-profit organization deeply rooted in the Hip Hop community with a mission to advance an ongoing series of movements to diminish global violence through education, critical dialogue, grassroots organizing and direct action.
The STVM achieves its mission by providing organized programs, workshops, symposiums and media campaigns that heighten the awareness of the effects of violence, create multi-generational dialogue and supplies parent and youth oriented educational tools for conflict resolution.
The STVM is calling upon fellow celebrities to take action. We are calling upon the mass media to address the images they put forth. We are calling for balance! Balance within ourselves, balance in the media, in our communities, in the world.
The first step in preventing violence is to understand it. Violence is an unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power. Violence is the diplomacy of the incompetent. Violence is unnecessary and costly. Violence kills what it intends to create. Violence is any activity that is consciously used to hurt oneself, another individual or group of people, whether through mind, body or spirit.
“The question is no longer between violence and non-violence it is between non-violence and non-existence.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In 1987, Afrika Bambaataa called a historic meeting at the Latin Quarter night club where he urged the Hip Hop community to become more politically and socially active. Personally influenced by the meeting, KRS-ONE went to work releasing a 12" single entitled “Stop The Violence.” The popularity of this song gave rise to a swelling community of conscious Hip Hop. Then in1989, KRS-ONE, along with Ann Carli (VP of A&R at Jive records) and author/musicologist Nelson George, developed an all-star project that would become a legendary Hip Hop peace anthem, “Self-Destruction”.
As KRS-ONE said, “We got ourselves together so that you could unite and fight for what’s right.” The recording boldly denounced Black-on-Black violence with quotes like this one from Kool Moe Dee “I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan and I shouldn’t have to run from a black man.” The proceeds from “Self-Destruction” were given to the Urban League for community programs and made it cool to ‘Stop The Violence.’
In response to the increased violence and confusion of today, Hip Hop activist/philosopher, KRS-ONE has revitalized the ‘Stop The Violence’ movement. He is calling upon the global Hip Hop community to take responsibility for the way in which conflict is resolved.
The arts yield a powerful influence on our collective culture. We are a collective of artists, activists, entertainers and educators who understand that we are powerful role models. We are taking responsibility. We intend to combine the power of the media and the arts to create our “hammer” so that we may shape our reality, a non-violent reality.
“Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” - Bertolt Brecht

To all our friends and those who know DJ Kutfather, we are holding a fundraiser for DJ Kutfather, who is a San Diego Legend and very well respected amongst his peers. Kut’s wife passed away yesterday unfortunately and to make the situation even more devastating Kut is confined to a wheel chair with limited mobility. His wife was his best friend as well as his caretaker, so we are going to turn our scheduled record release party into a fundraiser so that we can make the changes that Kut may experience in the future a bit easier on him. The reason why we are sending you this letter is to request any help you may be able to offer, mainly on the informative/promotion level. We only have the ability and budget to press up 2500 flyers and get the word out to limited people and we believe that this should be on a bigger scale than what we can accomplish in two weeks with strictly word of mouth and footwork. Very limited budget to promote this Fundraiser and get enough people to come out and show support for Kut who was scheduled to man the 1 & 2’s to celebrate Randam Luck’s Debut Album Release on New York based Babygrande Records originally scheduled to be held @ Deco’s in the Gaslamp Sat May 24th. We are still hoping that Kut will have the strength to come out and showcase his talents and be rewarded by us showing him that the San Diego Hip Hop Community can come togther and help each other out in times of loss and hardship. Any questions may be directed to Jimmy Powers @ 619-395-1151 or Lucky Martinelli @ 858-248-2002. Thank You very much in advance for your consideration.

The 9th Annual Universal Hip-Hop Parade steps off in the historically Black neighbourhood of Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn on Saturday August 16th at 3:00 PM from the intersection of Marcus Garvey Boulevard & Myrtle Avenue and proceeds down Marcus Garvey Boulevard to Fulton Street and finishes up in the commercial heart of Bed-Stuy, Fulton Street, recently renamed Harriet Tubman Boulevard and Bedford Avenue.
At the endpoint participants are urged to network and to patronize our local community businesses especially the wide range of our fine local restaurants.
The parade, an annual PEACEFUL [Eight Years Incident Free and Going . . . ] family-friendly non-profit educational and cultural event is always held on the Saturday before the anniversary of Marcus Garvey's August 17th birthday to bring to mind that Marcus Garvey himself also used culture as a tool to empower people and encouraged the growth of Black institutions.

The nearest subways to the Start Point are the J train, the M train or the Z train to the Myrtle Avenue/Broadway stop or the J train to the Flushing Avenue/Broadway stop. Once again the American just-us system has shown us it has no obligation to justice or law. To find the three officers not guilty of any wrong doing in the death of Sean Bell defies logic and common sense and furthers the wedge between law enforcement agencies and the communities they are paid to serve. The verdict reinforces the idea that the life of young African American and Latin American men are not worth protecting. I've been hearing from certain police and media officials that this is not a case of racism. They point out that 2 of the 3 officers in question were of African American and Latin background. This idea underscores the systemic ignorance in which our civil personnel are trained. For centuries now, our schools, religious institutions, police agencies and every other facet of American life teaches—better yet—demands of us adherence to the idea of white skin privilege, white skin superiority and black skin inferiority. Our community knows all too well of the black-skinned overseer who sees his own salvation in the oppression of his own brothers and sisters. His purpose in life is to prove to his master that he is not like his "pitiful brethren." This psychology leads him to be more violent and more harsh than his master for fear that he may one day be at the other end of the whip or bullet. We see this psychology play out every day in urban enclaves and suburban and rural retreats across this nation. We are still, unfortunately, driven by race and racism. A popular theme in police forces across the country is the idea that they are not black or white, they say they are blue. I have 2 questions then: When's the last time we've had a police brutality case where the officers in question were black and the victim was white? Secondly, when does ones HUMANITY out way the color of ones skin or uniform?
Black officers are much more likely to abuse their power when dealing with their own than with whites. Why? If race isn't an
